From local log to beautiful bowl

Selecting a log

Our unique journey begins with a carefully selected log, sourced from local trees here in Pennsylvania. I meticulously cut the log in half, seeking out the inherent beauty and figure within its grain. If a log doesn't possess that special character, it simply doesn't make the cut. This commitment ensures that every bowl starts with exceptional raw material.

The intricate art of turning

Turning on the lathe

Once selected, half a log is mounted onto the lathe's headstock using a faceplate. I carefully turn a mortise, allowing the chuck to securely hold the piece. After the initial shaping, the bowl is removed, reversed, and the interior is meticulously turned. This detailed process, guided by over 12 years of experience, ensures a perfectly balanced and beautifully shaped bowl.

Finishing touches and food-safe beauty

Finished bowl

After turning, each bowl undergoes a thorough sanding process to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. The final step involves applying a food-safe finish. I use either mineral oil and beeswax or a hard oil called Osmo. Both options not only enhance the wood's natural beauty but also ensure your bowl is safe for serving food, though many find them too beautiful to use!

Inspired by retirement, fueled by passion

My journey into woodturning began after retirement, over 12 years ago. Something within me urged me to try it. I quickly discovered the immense joy and relaxation woodturning brings. Being able to turn a unique bowl every day keeps my passion alive and ensures that each piece I create is infused with genuine care and dedication.
